What You Can Do to Keep Casco Bay Blue
We know that clean water only comes through each of us doing our part.  Below are a few ideas for how you can help protect water quality wherever you live.

▪ Dispose of chemicals properly – not down a storm drain, which can empty directly into the ocean. Get information on how to dispose of household hazardous waste, from the Bureau of Waste Management.  Learn about pesticide disposal.

▪ Conserve water with some simple tips.

Select less toxic household cleaning alternatives or use non-toxic substitues.

Practice ecological landscaping and gardening.
-Keep your lawn area small, which will help reduce stormwater runoff.
-Use trees and shrubs to absorb rainwater and prevent soil erosion.
-Test your soil to see what, if any, fertilizer it needs.
-If you must apply fertilizer, wait until late summer/early fall, when the soil is warm enough to absorb it.
-Check out the guide, Gardening to Conserve Maine's Landscape: plants to use and plants to avoid from Maine Cooperative Extension.

Maintain your septic system, if you have one, so pollutants don't leak into groundwater. Learn about how septic systems work and how to keep them working.

Practice clean boating techniques and empty marine sewage at pumpout facilities. Click here for a boating season checklist.

Ensure your car is well tuned to run at peak efficiency to reduce air pollution. When purchasing a new car, opt for one with high gas mileage.

Have your furnace, wood burning stove, and chimney checked and cleaned annually so they operate as cleanly as possible. This reduces airborne pollution that can end up in the ocean.

Report pollution to the authorities.

Donate to Friends of Casco Bay and support our work. We’d also love for you to get involved as a volunteer.
